Tiago Silva

ParadigmStories is the artistic practice of Portuguese artist Tiago Silva — a hand-built visual world developed across drawing, photography, moving image, design, animation and augmented reality.

A visual language built over decades

Tiago Silva has been drawing surreal black-and-white worlds since the late 1990s. His compositions are constructed through graphite, ink and charcoal, combining stairways, figures, machines, architecture, clocks, animals and recurring symbols into dense visual systems.

Each work is designed to stand alone while remaining capable of connecting to another. Over time this became one of the defining ideas behind ParadigmStories: the artwork does not necessarily end at the edge of the paper.

The practice explores time, memory, identity, transformation and the tension between order and chaos. Physical drawing remains the source; animation, sound, colour, blockchain, augmented reality and immersive space become later states of the same visual language.

Before ParadigmStories

Design, photography, digital commerce and moving image

The current practice grew from more than two decades of applied visual work, image-making and independent creative projects. Blockchain arrived much later; it did not begin the practice.

A decade inside a photography studio

Tiago spent around ten years working in a photography studio, primarily as a videographer and video editor while also photographing selected projects. Framing, sequencing, rhythm and the relationship between still and moving images became part of the visual thinking that later entered the artwork.

Six years across design and digital commerce

For roughly six years Tiago worked as a graphic designer within a large hardware-retail business, where his role extended well beyond conventional design. He worked across website management, e-commerce presentation, search visibility and SEO, marketing materials, campaigns and the daily translation of a large commercial catalogue into a coherent digital experience.

Building projects from the ground up

Alongside employment, Tiago co-founded several creative ventures and was closely involved in their design and implementation. One later project developed into a cycling-apparel company, where he designed jerseys, bib shorts, visual identity, product imagery and presentation. It is one chapter in a broader history of applied design rather than the centre of the pre-blockchain practice.

Continuity

Applied practice feeding the artwork

Graphic systems, photography, editing, web design, marketing, product development and entrepreneurship all feed the current studio practice. The common thread is the construction of visual systems — learning how an image, object or story changes when it moves between paper, screen, product, space and audience.

Method

Order holding space for chaos

Many compositions are organised through harmonic armatures — geometric frameworks that establish rhythm, balance and directional force. Inside that structure, the image develops intuitively through accumulation, erasure and association.

This tension between control and improvisation is fundamental to ParadigmStories. Classical compositional order sits beside surreal disruption; precise linework coexists with chance; a single image can function as both a finished object and a fragment of a larger visual architecture.

Physical work moving through digital space

Tempus Impromptu received the Best Phygital NFT award at the ftNFT YoCerebrum Awards 2024. The work and wider practice have also appeared through NFT.NYC, Times Square, NFC Lisbon, NFT Paris, the Oculus at the World Trade Center, Artcrush and Decentraland Art Week.

The same body of work can therefore exist as drawing, exhibition object, animated state, augmented layer and spatial installation — while its origin remains visible in the hand.
